10 Popular MBA Concentrations for 2023

What is an MBA Concentration?

An MBA concentration is a specialized area of study within a master’s in business administration (MBA) program. MBA concentrations allow students to focus their studies on a specific area of business, such as finance, marketing, or operations and gain expertise in that field. MBA concentrations typically require a set of courses within the concentration area, as well as additional coursework in general business topics. Some programs may also offer experiential learning opportunities, such as internships or case studies, to give students practical experience in the concentration area. MBA concentrations are often designed to prepare students for leadership roles in specific industries or functional areas. Some examples of MBA concentrations include finance, marketing, operations, human resources, and international business. Prospective MBA students can choose a concentration that aligns with their career goals and interests. It is important to research and compare different MBA programs and concentrations to find the one that best fits your needs.

What is the Difference between MBA Concentrations, MBA Specializations, and MBA Specialty Streams?

MBA concentrations, MBA specializations, and MBA specialty streams are all terms used to describe the specific areas of focus that MBA students can choose to pursue within their MBA program. The specific terminology may vary depending on the school and program, but in general, these terms refer to specific coursework or curricular requirements that allow students to tailor their MBA studies to a specific area of business. MBA specializations are more focused than concentrations, and often involve a deeper dive into a particular subject area within a concentration. MBA specialty streams are similar to specializations, but they may be more flexible in terms of the specific courses required and may allow students to tailor their coursework to their individual interests or career goals. Ultimately, the choice between a concentration, specialization, or specialty stream will depend on the specific goals and interests of the student. Some MBA programs may offer a wide range of options, while others may have more limited choices. It is important for MBA students to carefully consider their career goals and the specific skills and knowledge they hope to gain from their MBA program in order to choose the option that is most appropriate for them. 10 Most Popular MBA Concentrations for 2023 The most popular MBA concentrations vary depending on the specific school and program, as well as the current job market and economic conditions. THE BUSINESS CASE FOR OHS CHANGE – HSL 8040
A business case attempts to answer the question “Why should my organization invest the proposed resources (both time and money) to implement the proposed action or set of actions?” And typically, the answer incorporates the considerations of alignment with the organization’s strategic direction and goals, resource availability, affordability, financial value (i.e., profitability), social value, and acceptability of risk. In this course we attempt to identify which systemic approaches deliver the greatest financial and social value while maximizing alignment with organizational goals, resource availability, and appetite for risk. And to wrap up, we review Communication Strategies for presenting the business case to the Board of Directors / Executive Management to maximize the probability of approval.
ENTERPRISE RISK MANAGEMENT – HSL 8041
This course begins with the identification and definition of OHS and OHS-relevant risks, including a discussion of how such enterprise-wide risks are interrelated. We then analyze these risks, especially the downside severity of the outcomes, the organization’s short-term and long-term costs, and the variability and/or statistical uncertainty associated with the different outcomes. We follow with a discussion of best practices in risk mitigation, determined by a measurable reduction of frequency and severity of the negative outcomes, and/ or measurable increase in organizational performance, illustrated with several case studies. This course lays the foundation for our subsequent discussion of how the entire organization’s risk management efforts can contribute to the creation and protection of the organization’s financial and social value.
ESSENTIAL COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS FOR HEALTH & SAFETY LEADERS – HSL 8042
In the significant majority of today’s organizations, leaders cannot be effective using an autocratic leadership style. It is widely accepted and endorsed by practitioners and academics alike that a collaborative leadership style has proven to be most effective, which requires leaders to possess and exhibit a very large array of leadership and interpersonal skills that encourage organizations, and the people within them, to want to move forward. In this course we will focus on enhancing the student’s understanding and skill regarding an essential subset comprising communication (verbal, written and physical), conflict management, negotiation, and change management. In addition to classic pedagogical tools, we will engage a wide variety of complementary tools such as videos, case studies, simulations and role plays. Students of the Essential Communication and Interpersonal Skills for Leaders will be able to demonstrate communication and interpersonal skills valued by management and colleagues to motivate self-awareness and growth within an organization’s stakeholders.

Ryan Fabi, EMBA

Health & Safety Leadership Specialty Stream · University of Fredericton SENIOR DIRECTOR HEALTH AND SAFETY Over the last 20 years, Ryan has developed a robust portfolio working in a health and safey capacity across various sectors. Ryan holds a CRSP designation, and as a member of senior leadership, he would regularly attends meetings with executives. It was during these meetings that he realized the need for further education, as he often felt ill-prepared to discuss advanced business concepts.
Meetings had safety as part of the agenda, but most of the discussion focused on business results, forecasts, strategy, budget, and financial targets. These were areas I wanted more exposure to, so I could be an active participant.   SOCIAL ENTERPRISE LEADERSHIP SPECIALTY STREAM The choice for professionals looking for a blended bottom line The most immediate roadblock for organizations seeking to take on more social responsibility is their bottom line. It can be an immense challenge for leaders to align social and commercial goals in a way that is good for business, and the rise of the Social Enterprise model combats this difficulty. Seeking to balance sustainable profitability with a social mission, Social Enterprise leaders must focus on delivering blended value results that minimize the need to compromise on their social mission. It takes a skilled individual to navigate these complexities, and the Social Enterprise Leadership specialty stream prepares professionals to communicate the effectiveness of a triple bottom line.       Going back to school is a big life decision, and we’d like to help you through that. If you have any questions or would just like to look over some additional information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Let us know how we can help you get ahead in your career.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL ENTERPRISE – SEL 8030 This course introduces the foundational characteristics of the social enterprise, beginning with the core concept of “blended value”, which comprises both financial value and social value. Followed by a detailed examination of: a range of evolving legal frameworks and performance measures; financial and social value forecasting; and important analytic decision-aiding concepts used for feasibility assessment and strategic business planning. This course concludes with discussion of appropriate organizational structures, and how to effectively manage internal cultural change and internal and external stakeholder communications.   CURRENT AND EMERGING TOOLS FOR FINANCING THE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE – SEL 8031 The establishment and growth of a social enterprise requires substantial finance investment which must come from sources other than charitable donations. This course undertakes detailed examinations of which current and emerging financial tools are appropriate for which types of social enterprises at which stage of the enterprise’s life cycle, and an analysis of how the investor may conduct a risk-return assessment of the social enterprise seeking financing. Included in this examination will be a review of social impact bonds, and managing social enterprise investor relations.   SOCIAL ENTERPRISE AND PUBLIC POLICY – SEL 8032
This case-based course examines key examples of the socioeconomic results that social enterprises have directly generated through their operations, as well as the enterprises’ strategically planned communications and public relations campaigns. Observing and measuring such social impacts, we can begin to better understand how governments might view social enterprises as valuable instruments of public policy, and how governments have in fact behaved, and how they might behave. This course will also address topics of special interest such as Social Impact Purchasing Policy, and the financial and social effects of free trade policies.

Whitney Keyes, MBA

Social Enterprise Specialty Stream · University of Fredericton FOUNDER & CEO, WK PRODUCTIONS   During her early career at Microsoft, Whitney never felt she never had enough time to get her MBA. She “got entrepreneurialism in [her] blood at a young age”, and focused her early education on the “science of trying to figure out how to communicate about a product or service; how to connect with customers.”
Whitney’s goals were centred around wanting to do good in a community, in society, and around the world.

I [met] people that were in the oil industry, and working in the Prime Minister’s office, and social entrepreneurs running their own businesses … and, because Canada is such an inclusive country, many different people from all around the world.

PROFESSIONAL SELLING & LEADERSHIP SPECIALTY STREAM The choice for ambitious sales management professionals Higher education in sales has always been scarce. UFred has overcome this issue by bringing prominent Sales Management Executives to the table. The profession of sales has evolved dramatically towards using data and business knowledge to drive success. By delivering an online program influenced by a contingent of industry sales leaders, UFred faculty understands the nuances present in today’s always-changing sales environment. This program has been designed to allow students to move into senior or executive roles while they obtain and apply the business acumen needed to drive success. DEFINING LEADERSHIP

WHAT KIND OF LEADER WILL YOU BE?

The mantra has been that to be successful in sales, you need experience. Methods and secrets learned in the field; intricacies that are difficult to extract as a science. To achieve a career goal in sales, an individual also requires robust professional development, training, and education. Advanced post-secondary education has had trouble conveying these concepts in an academic context, as many curriculum developers and instructors are not actively working in a sales role. This stream is designed to help sales professionals blend business concepts with sales experience. The Professional Selling & Leadership specialty stream at UFred addresses the need for a Masters degree for sales professionals looking to progress into leadership positions. Created and taught by a faculty of professors still active in senior sales roles, you will be given a platform to harmonize field experience with navigating business structures, increasingly technical and mature procurement departments, multichannel approaches, relationship building, and developing complex solutions that are effective in the ever- changing marketplace. BUSINESS ANALYTICS LEADERSHIP SPECIALTY STREAM The choice for professionals who want to leverage the power of data In virtually every sector, data production continues to increase at a staggering pace. Data-driven decisions exist at every level, and reliability on analytic systems is high. It is crucial that managers and analysts not only understand business analytics and key metrics, but also are able to leverage that information to capture a competitive advantage. Leaders need to learn how to best approach and present big data solutions for the benefit of their organizations. In addition to mastering core business fundamentals, by understanding of data accuracy, acquisition, context, predictability, and simulation you will be enabled to approach and solve the right problems with the right information on a professional level. Going back to school is a big life decision, and we’d like to help you through that. If you have any questions or would just like to look over some additional information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. DEFINING LEADERSHIP

WHAT KIND OF LEADER WILL YOU BE?

Consulting, like leadership, is really about influencing. As such, consultants are knowledgeable, skilled, and trusted persons who are in a position to influence their client. Like leadership, consulting is about change through improved organizational performance. A consultant provides objective advice and supports the implementation of business solutions. It is not “telling” a client what to do; but guiding the client to make decisions and then supports the execution of those decisions which ultimately adds value to the organization. Consulting Leadership is comprised of three courses designed to provide the knowledge and skills for successful consulting. The first two courses use a complex progressive case where students can apply their specific area of expertise to address organizational problems. The third course provides the opportunity to apply the new knowledge and skills to an actual consulting opportunity. Built by experienced consultants, the course provides proven concepts plus actual “tools” used in real-world consulting projects. HUMAN RESOURCE LEADERSHIP – SPECIALTY STREAM The choice for tightening the gap between HR and business A well-executed Human Resource initiative can have a significant impact on the bottom line and overall success of an organization. When strategically integrated with an understanding of business practices and motivations, HR programs are proven to be powerful tools. This program focuses on core management principles, compensation management, training, development, selection, and performance management. Professionals will learn how to refine their knowledge and effectively collaborate with similarly motivated professionals. HR managers can now advance the strategic success of their companies completely online, without disruption to their careers or personal lives. 7 Different Ways to Pay For Your MBA

7 Different Ways to Pay For Your MBA When it comes to finding the means to pay for an MBA program, there is no “one size fits all” solution. Odds are you’ll use several methods. Some grant and scholarship programs have closing dates that are well before the disbursement of funds. Starting early and researching the different ways to pay for your MBA gives you the maximum amount of time to prepare and apply. Your Money or Theirs? You have two basic choices when it comes to paying for that MBA: use your money or someone else’s. If you planned ahead—in some cases, way ahead—you may already have some of the funds you need. Borrowing money that needs to be repaid is also like using your own funds; you’ll need to come up with the cash to pay your lender back after your education is done. When someone else truly pays for your MBA, a third party (or several third parties) supplies you with funds that don’t have to be paid back. Start with Grants, Scholarships, and Financial Aid Your first stop should be the financial aid office of your chosen institution. They will be able to clearly outline any financial options you have and apply for financial aid on your behalf. Any reduction in cost that the institution can offer will directly impact the amount of money you must come up with, so it is well worth the time to apply. Scholarships You may qualify for more scholarships than you realize; there are scholarships not only for individuals with specific industries or who meet academic criteria, but for those that embody the unique spirit of an individual or group. A few places to start looking for scholarships include: Grants A scholarship comes from a school, business, or individual, but a grant comes from the government. It does not have to be repaid, is sometimes based on income alone (not merit), and can be applied for by any U.S. student. Federal and state grants can help fund a portion of your education; start with FAFSA and work your way through the process to see how much you can acquire for your MBA. Grants can also come from organizations like these:
  • American Association of University Women
  • Accenture American Indian Graduate Level Scholarship
  • Military MBA
  • Little Family Foundation MBA Fellowship
  • National Society of Hispanic MBA
  • Toigo Fellowship for African-American, Alaska Native, Asian-American/Pacific Islander, Hispanic, or Native American descent students
  • Thurgood Marshall scholarship for African-American students
  • National Black MBA Association Grants
  • American Indian Graduate Center Fellowships
The GI Bill If you have already served or are considering serving in the military, one of the benefits offered is the ability to pay for school. Explore your options with your local recruitment or VA office to learn how you could fund your MBA with military service. Company-sponsored Education Some businesses offer financial assistance for employees who are attending college. If your employer offers this as a benefit, then you could acquire additional funds here. Just make sure you read the fine print and understand what you are offering or agreeing to in return for those corporate dollars. If your company doesn’t have a formal program yet, it could be worth asking about. Use Your Money or Credit to Finance your MBA Savings: If you planned ahead, you’re a rock star! Use some of that 529 savings plan to fund your MBA dreams. If you have some savings, you can use those funds as well; just don’t zero out your savings account entirely. Emergencies can and do come up while you are attending school and you may need some backup funding. Student Loans: If you’re like most of us, you’ll need to fund at least some of your MBA with financing—or a student loan. A federal student loan could help you pay for your MBA after you have exhausted your other options. These funds need to be paid back and are made via the Federal Direct Student Loan Program. There is a maximum limit of $138,500 for graduate students.

Online or on-campus, going back to school for your MBA is a big step. The answers will give you a better sense on what direction you want to take your career. RECHARGE YOUR CAREER Staying relevant in the workplace is a necessity in any industry. In today’s fast-paced professional world, that can be a trick. Here are insights on how education can help you recharge your career – or take it a different direction altogether. Speaking of Career Change… The career many professionals entered 10 to 20 years ago almost certainly has changed over the years. It might not even exist anymore due to technological advances. On the other hand, many of today’s fastest growing career fields weren’t around 10 to 20 years ago—think social media or SEO consulting. These advances, specifically in mobile technology, have also freed us from geographical limitations, in- cluding working remotely … or taking online classes. In fact, with the tremendous improvement in access to quality, flexible higher education through online learning, working adults no longer have to choose be- tween a career and a quality higher education. They can pursue both at the same time. Training Certifications Versus College Degrees From internal workshops and weekend seminars to one-off courses at local schools, training can help you build the skills necessary to take advantage of immedi- ate opportunities or needs in the marketplace. It teach- es you what you need to know now. It’s an option best suited for entry-level or intermediate-level positions. For mid- to late-career professionals looking for ad- vancement or those with minimal formal higher ed- ucation, a university program is likely a better choice. It’s an employer-pleasing credential. And it provides for long-lasting educational change—helping you develop the ability to adapt to and lead change, cre- ate new value for an organization, and apply critical thinking skills to future possibilities or problems. On- line or on campus, college programs offer the kinds of skills that will serve you for a lifetime. Show, Don’t Tell As you re-enter the workforce or seek to change ca- reers, your new degree or certificate will be far more valuable to an existing or prospective employer if you can demonstrate how you’ve been able to apply what you’ve learned to solve real business challenges. (This is actually a fundamental part of graduate degree pro- grams at Post University to help adult learners develop the skills and knowledge pertinent to their world today.) A college education—online or on campus—can also help you expand and develop your network: from LinkedIn to online Meetup groups to networking events to your university network of fellow students, faculty, and alumni. Lifelong Learning Keep learning, whether you pursue formal higher ed- ucation or develop new skills and build on existing ones through less formal means. In the ever-chang- ing job market, it’s crucial to stay current with your knowledge and skills to prove your worth in your po- sition and field. Look for opportunities to expand your knowl- edge base and don’t assume that just because you’ve done something the same way for years that it’s the best way to continue doing it today.
