MBA in Data Science: Where Management Meets Technology

The whole world is being digital and is getting influenced by technology. How management could be deprived of such a giant. Machine learning and data science which are complete tech stuff is leaving their footsteps in management. Top schools are exploring novel alternatives to the traditional classroom. Advanced technology, from HDTV sets to artificial intelligence, is increasingly utilized in business schools as they search for better ways to educate the growing number of remote students who do not have the time to take two years out of the workforce to get an MBA.  In the Oxford HIVE, as it is known, professors engage with up to 84 participants. The technology is fully interactive; teachers can address participants individually, split them into groups and conduct real-time polls. And, of course, participants can see and hear one another. The software is so advanced it monitors the level of attentiveness in each individual, which it judges and scores based on their facial expressions and engagement with the class. Meanwhile, schools are experimenting with classrooms that enable the digital visualization of data as it becomes more important to business management careers. The Schulich School of Business and Deloitte are creating a “Visualization Lab”. The approximately 800-square-foot room will explore advances in predictive analytics, natural language processing, machine learning, analytics design and data-based story-telling. It will be available to students in Schulich’s master of business analytics program, MBA and other courses. Visualization techniques are the easiest way to translate very complex data into a form that is ready to be used by business executives to solve problems and plan for the future. There is a high demand for leaders who can analyze and communicate trends, quickly understand industry shifts, and influence and drive change. Data Science Data science has gone from the preserve of geeky engineers to one of the most preeminent and sought-after proficiencies in a business manager’s toolbox. One recent study from the Graduate Management Admission Council, which runs the GMAT, said that demand for business school graduates in data analytics roles had outstripped demand for them to work in consulting and investment banking functions — their traditional forte. Examples include marketeers or salespeople combing through customer data to create more targeted ads and pitches, but beyond that, data science is transforming the work of businesses in all industries, from finance and banking to retail and transportation. As a result of the widespread embrace of data science, business analytics courses are cropping up on MBA programs at a rapid rate, and schools are launching standalone master’s programs too. Of 209 business schools surveyed recently by Kaplan Test Prep, an education services company, 72 percent said they offered courses in the subject. MBA students will need a thorough education in the art of data science, given the growing prevalence and importance of it in the corporate world. This includes the economics of analytics, its strategic ramifications and the more technical content, such as how to use algorithms. Data suggest career prospects are rosy for those with data analytics skills. The consultancy firm McKinsey & Company forecasted that by this year, the US alone would face a shortfall of 1.5 million managers with the know-how to use data analysis to make effective decisions. Industries that are data-rich, such as technology, definitely seem to value any skill that enhances the ability to work fluently with data.  These skills are undoubtedly an advantage on the job market What makes technology to step in MBA? There is a strong need in business for leaders who understand all dimensions of analytics in an enterprise environment. The ideal MBA serves as the interface between the technical and the non-technical members of the team.

For MBA Success, Magic is to be Focused and Concentrated!

0
Many would be reading this article while reading word magic. No , I am  not going to tell you some magic or spelling which will make you more focused or increase your concentration power. Magic is within you. It is only you who can create magic. Most of students so search on How to remain focus? or How to increase concentration. You may find some brilliant tips which is temporary. It will not provide you a consistency. Question How to remain focused or increase concentration power arises when you are left with lots of work. Basically it’s a cycle. You are left with lots of work which makes you not to concentrate on a single one. It’s like there are 4 different works you have to complete daily. If one of the work is left to be completed on any day than it adds on a burden for second day. Similarly this burden keeps on adding which results in an extra pressure in your mind and you just keep on wondering how much you have to complete rather than completing that work in real sense. And when you will try to do one work , your mind makes you think about other pending works too, which finally results in only stress and completion of not a single work. To save yourself from this trap firstly keep yourself calm and plan your whole day. Make one thing clear that no matter how long it would take I have to complete my work of that very particular day as planned. Also, set your priorities , also if possible try to wake up early and give precious gift to yourself i.e. your own time. It is only you who can make yourself motivated. It is easy to complaint but quite tough to work on. Once a habit is build than no more complaints will be there.  Just keep consistency in your work and other issues will get sorted for you. One more complaint students make is that they do not get proper environment that they require to concentrate. It is not more than an excuse. If you are doing some work give all of your focus into that particular work at that very time. No matter what happens in your surroundings ,all you have to just keep your focus on your work. It is your work which is your priority at that very time. Someone enters your place or some other stuff keep on going it should not affect you even by an inch. All you should know what your work is and your mind should also think only about that work at that time. No other shit should occupy your mind. If you are able to achieve all these, trust me you are going to ask again How to remain focused or increase concentration power. Don’t study or treat books as a work to be done. Make them your companion and study them in a fun way effortlessly.

Recent Trends in MBA Admissions

MBA is one of the most demanding professions. As seen in 2017 a great hike in MBA graduates recruitment. The trend seems to continue in 2018 as well. Trends do change with time. Some are trendsetters and some are trend followers. No matter what the field change is the rule of life. For convenience, we can sum the business world by the acronym CUVA- complex, uncertain, volatile, and ambiguous. Technological innovation, political shifts, and developing economies are all impacting how and where the business is done.
  •         Soft skills to emerge as prime focus
Technology is emerging rapidly such that automation and innovation has changed the workforce. It’s high time to get prepared for the jobs that do not came into existence .People are  behind gadgets, love to whatsapp rather than talking face to face. One will say that jobs may get decreased in management sector, robots might overcome humans. No it is not so. Emotions is a key element which makes humans different from robots. At the end management is a field which will work on emotions and the internal sense. No robot can replace humans. If robots gonna run business than every company would be same. Training in soft skills, such as negotiation, leadership, teamwork and problem solving therefore remains a top priority for business schools. “Students are really tech savvy, and this is important, but they still definitely need those soft skills, because any business until now has involved a human being. There is always a human, or a board, that takes the decision.”
  •         Application Process going Digital
A major change one will be able to see is in application process. For MBA application one has to write essays. But now requirements are changed, students will have choice between written essay or video essay. It’s not ganna be easy at all, no one is easier than other. Instagramming  is a recent development. One can submit six images (infographics, pictures or charts), along with six captions to promote their candidacy to the admissions team.
  •         Online MBA
Gone are the days of going college regularly or attend college in real. Technology has made it easy to be at your place and attend lectures virtually. “Interactivity with online courses is higher than with classroom-based programs because you always have someone able to give feedback. There is no constraint of time zones—the world is your classroom.”
  •         Diversity brings a  positive change
Gone are the days when men were the leading ones. Trend seems to change,  recently 10 popular Universities were ranked for the most female population. Trend has changed from 3 women in a class of 50 to having an equal gender split today. In fact financial performance seemed to improve of many companies with more leading women alongside men.
  •         Technology Brings a New Classroom
Technology has disrupted the business world, and is disrupting world of business education too. Techniques from online courses will be brought into the classroom. Educational technology has been a big part of the transformation. Much, if not all of an MBA course can be uploaded online now. This includes the course materials, but also seminars, projects and tasks. Lectures can be watched and replayed – there’s no longer a need to copy a classmate’s notes. Gamification is also playing a more prominent part in education. Students can engage with business simulations, where each student plays a role in running a company for example, making learning increasingly interactive, but also more effective. All this means that textbooks in the classroom are becoming a thing of the past. In class, professors and coaches dedicate quality time to their students, allowing students to become actors rather than passive learners.
  •         Specialization trend to continue
In recent years, specialized MBA degrees have grown in number and diversity. From entrepreneurship to sports management or any other. he needs and requirements of companies are changing. Some now prefer to train employees in a certain way and model them to the company culture. People need to be more specialized in certain aspects. The demand for specialization comes from all sides. No particular sector could work without management. Trend is changing from old dominant specializations to fresh new specializations.   In coming era more trends are to come which will change the outlook of management from up to down. More is to come. Let’s see what evolution will time bring.

Before I started my time at the School of Wines & Spirits Business, I was missing a strong network of industry professionals and I didn’t feel like I had a network in the industry I wished to work in. Today, I have that network. I am a part of that network, and have a better idea about the industry that I want to work in! When my CBC Web Series aired, I was honoured by the support that the school showed me. It was shared and supported by both faculty and classmates alike. I will always remember this. To know your school supports your achievements is a wonderful feeling. To get into a well known or say your preferred B-School is not an easy job. It doesn’t mean it is impossible. To get into a good college one needs a well score in MBA entrance examinations. While preparing for all these examinations, initially many start with great dedication and passion. They spend their time in preparing effortlessly. As the days pass level of dedication and motivation starts dropping. You may get stressed and even leave your work completely. It is not a solution or it is? There are also many who complaint about lack of motivation ,concentration or resources. I may sound harsh but the truth is  that all you are making is excuses. Like all I may say these are best 5 tips to remain motivated ,it’s all temporary. You will not find a permanent  solution as it is within you. Yes you heard it right! I will tell some points which you have to practice with yourself and have to find your answers. Let’s begin The first and most important thing is make yourself clear, seriously you want to pursue it or it is just an influence of one or more friends or relatives. Once you are clear that there is no look back. Now, secondly ask a question to yourself, Why I am doing this? What are my reasons of giving so much hardwork and dedication to a work? What will happen if I will not do my work? Once you are ready with your answers than no further motivation session or quotes will be required. You will be clear with your reasons of doing MBA , these will be so solid that you will definitely do work effortlessly. If still a bit of motivation is left then here is a story for you. Imagine that you are stuck in a desert. There is no water left with you and your throat is dried upto the mouth. You are in extreme need of water but there is no water for you. You are left with no energy to search water. Now what will you do? Drink your own urine . Yes you read it right. Why will you drink urine, reasons and circumstances were so solid that you have to do so to save your life. Similarly is with your goals. Just find out your reasons to do work and than motivation will be in you. You will be knowing your circumstances and reasons to do that particular work and if you will not do so than you are the one who have to bear all the outcomes. Apply this to your life and the results will be shown in some days. It is not a miracle. Just a side of your own hidden in you.

Success in MBA: 10 Key Points

0
MBA programs are so demanding, once you are in the program students do need time to think and analyse how to get out the most of it. To make sure hit the ground running and to maximise the success in your course. Here  are some of the  essential points and tips that will be helpful and practical advice for MBA students.
  1.   Make most of your knowledge
Pursuing an MBA provides you tremendous opportunities to explore the company world , meet new leaders and figure out what it really is  you want to do. Indulge yourself into informational interviews, obtain data, attend conferences and open the doors for yourself. Make use of all the freedom to explore new opportunities.
  1.   Don’t  take part in comparison race
One or the other do make a biggest mistake by comparing himself with his peers. Firstly make it clear that you have to defeat yourself not to others. Let others do whatever they want. Just check whether you have made progress from yesterday or not. This comparison race is endless and a lot  of depressing.
  1.   Don’t try be someone else
Remember this ” Sooner you are yourself, the better your experience will be”. While studying in a B-School it is necessary to try new things. When you go into actual corporate world, in an environment with new people and lots of new opportunities. Unknowingly it may happen that you might work not as you want to or according to your goals. Be aware of it.
  1.   Focus
Don’t forget what is your goal and what you want to achieve. Tons of distractions will be waiting for you. All you need is to remember your reason of being in management school. From the very early set targets and focus on job in your targeted company. Write down all your motives on a paper and have a look daily, it will never let you distracted from your path.
  1.   Push Yourself
Do not limit yourself. Try to get out of comfort and learn something new. It will push your boundaries. A new approach to handle and look situations will be introduced in you. Another benefit it will provide is the new ideas that you will get and opportunities that you cannot experience in classroom. Also a network build up will be there which will help you later while in job.
  1.   Holistic approach to academics
No need to become an expert, all you need is to acquire a top-level understanding of key tools and skills so that you may identify potential risks and opportunities, ask good questions and make informed recommendations.
  1.   Extra-Curricular
Initially programs in B-schools can be draining and stressful. It will be easy to neglect yourself and your wellbeing . Among all these it is necessary to maintain your own wellbeing.  Find out a hobby that makes you happy, relaxed. It will boost you up with positive energy and will also be like a therapy for you. This extra activity can be anything cooking, dancing anything that you like.
  1.   Informational Interviews to get ahead
Instead, use informational interviews to narrow the scope of your search, gather information that will give you a leg up in interviews, and build a network of contacts that will actively work to help you. When you go on informationals, learn as much as you can about your target industry, company, and role, and impress your contacts with your genuine interest and credentials without treating your talk like a formal interview. And while you should start by leveraging your “traditional” network – classmates, friends, family, professors – to set up informationals, force yourself to step outside your comfort zone. Talk to professionals that come to your school to speak in classes or at conferences, and cold contact people in your target field on LinkedIn, especially alumni of your MBA program.
  1.   Positively Impact the MBA Experience
MBA students get really good at talking and thinking about themselves during business school. The process forces you to craft a great story for why you should be hired, pushes you to analyze your own strengths and weaknesses, and provides services tailored to your specific goals. The well-being and success of your peers can quickly become an alternate pursuit or use of your energy. Avoid this trap of self-absorption at all costs! A great way to improve the value of your MBA is by having a positive impact on someone else’s experience.
  1.   Career Goals
Having a long-term career goal makes it easier to determine what summer internship, and ultimately what first post-MBA job, to pursue. Many new and exciting job opportunities will come your way throughout the MBA, and this can be overwhelming and stressful. By taking the time up front to thoughtfully identify your long-term career aspirations, you can focus your efforts on the short-term career opportunities that matter and increase your chances of securing your ideal internship or full-time job.
